Current Android method

On current Android versions, removing a Google Account from a phone is normally done from the device account settings. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Google lists names such as Passwords & accounts, Users & accounts, or Manage accounts.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open the account-management section.
  3. Select the Google Account you want to remove.
  4. Tap Remove account and confirm.
  5. If it is the only Google Account on the device, Android may ask for the screen lock, PIN, pattern, or password.

Removing an account from the device is different from deleting the Google Account itself. Device removal stops that account’s mail, contacts, calendar and other synced data from remaining on that phone; it does not erase the account from Google’s servers.

If the phone was factory-reset and is asking for a previously used Google Account, that can be part of Android device protection. Do not try to bypass that protection. Use the account that previously belonged to the device or follow Google’s account-recovery process.

If the account still appears after removal

Check whether the account is still signed in inside a separate app, browser profile or work profile. Some phones also show accounts managed by a device administrator. Removing a Google Account from Android settings should not be confused with removing a browser profile or deleting the account permanently.

If the device is being sold or given away, first back up the data you need, remove your accounts through normal settings, and then use the manufacturer’s supported reset process. That reduces the chance of leaving personal information on the device and avoids triggering account-protection problems for the next legitimate owner.
