What is Aadhaar
Aadhaar is a verifiable 12-digit identification number that UIDAI issues free of charge to residents of India.
What is PAN
The PAN card is a ten-character alphanumeric identifier that is a permanent account number(PAN), in the form of a laminated “PAN card”, that the Indian Income Tax Department issues to any person who requests it.
Linking your PAN card with Aadhaar is a must if you want to file your tax return. Pursuant to Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Law, anyone who has a PAN and is eligible to receive an Aadhaar must report their Aadhaar number to the tax authorities.
To extend, The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued a notification on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, to extend the deadline to link the PAN card with the Aadhaar card. The date to connect the PAN card with the Aadhaar card has been extended until March 31, 2021.
Is it Mandatory to Link Aadhar to PAN Card?

So, you have the option to add your PAN with Aadhaar by sending an SMS. You can link the UID number by sending an SMS to 567678 or 56161 from the registered PAN mobile number. To do so, you must type UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar> <10-digit PAN>.
How to request the update/correction of the PAN card online
- Go to the ‘Update PAN / Aadhaar Details’ section of the electronic income tax filing website.
- From the ‘Application Type’ drop-down menu, select the third option: ‘Changes to existing PAN data or correction/reprint of PAN card (no changes to existing PAN data)’.

If your name is spelled incorrectly, the following is the offline process to link your PAN card to Aadhaar:
- Visit the Aadhaar Registration Center near you.

- Complete the Aadhaar registration form.
- Submit the form along with the documents.

- Visit the mobile operator store.
- Request a new sim.
- Provide your copy of your Aadhaar for proof of identification and proof of address.
- Scan your fingerprint with a biometric scanner and verify your Aadhaar.
Steps to Link Aadhaar to PAN on Online
- Go to Google and enter this Portal https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ for electronic filing of open income taxes. Then click on the Link.
2. A popup window appears asking you to link your PAN to Aadhaar. If not, go to the Profile Settings link in the menu bar and click the Actions link.
3. Enter the PAN number, Aadhaar Number, and names as per Aadhaar, and check the two boxes. And, you must enter the captcha code or you can request OTP for your mobile number.
4. After entering all the above details, now, click on the ‘Link Aadhaar‘ button.
5. The pop-up message will indicate that your Aadhaar has successfully connected to your PAN.
6. After a few days or instantly, You can check whether your Adhaar is linked to PAN or not. Click on the View Status Link.
7. Here, enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number and Click on the View Link Aadhaar status button.
